Bekins is best known as a “belly-botany" macro-photographer, shooting flowers on location with a minimal amount of equipment. Natural light defines her photographic style that captures enticing images of gardens, wilderness, scenic places, people, and farmers’ markets.
Bekins' photographs are an expression of her passion and volunteer commitment to the natural world. She is an advocate of Open Space, conservation, and nature education for children. She was responsible for the founding of the Terwilliger Nature Guides, the Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Foundation, and the Terwilliger Guild. She inspired volunteers and created the framework for them to take an important role in Marin's environmental movement by teaching young children responsible stewardship for our natural world.
She conceived and produced five award-winning educational films, Tripping with Terwilliger, that reach viewers and classrooms all over the world.
Years ago, during her long successful career as a public relations specialist, her camera focused on agriculture in Hawaii and California and in S. F., the services provided by the American Red Cross, to accompany her publicity stories for publication in magazines and newspapers.
Awards include the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame, Community Service Award, the Chevron Conservation Award, Marin Volunteer Activist of the Year, John Muir Award, CINE Golden Eagle, and she is a Fellow of the Explorers Club. She and her husband, Don, have lived in Belvedere, CA since 1964. They have two grown children, Linn and Laurence, and four grandsons, Connor, Reed, Colin and Oliver.
Bekins’ vast collection offers a trove of stock photography, and images for the private collector. Contact her with special requests and inquiries. Exhibitions may be arranged to benefit non-profits.
